David perched on the edge of the kitchen counter, the morning sun streaming through the window. He was waiting for the kettle to boil, idly scrolling through his phone. A day of nothing on the agenda felt like a gift. He’d finally finished the last chapter of his book; the creative exhaustion had eased, replaced by a quiet satisfaction.

He wandered into the study, the sunbeam following him. He decided to finally sort through his father's old desk, a daunting task. The drawers offered a treasure trove of forgotten ephemera: stamps, pens, photographs. A thick folder, tucked away in the back, contained a single, folded sheet.

His father's elegant script filled the page. It was a resignation letter. David felt a quiet, expansive calm settle within him. He leaned back against the desk, feeling the smooth wood against his back, and read the words, admiring the neatness and precision. The world felt utterly still.
